Background of the Study

Various academics, such as Adams, for example, have given disasters a variety of definitions and classed them in a variety of ways (2022). Best (2022), Bryan(2021) and Bryan (2020). Whether they are caused by natural forces or by the actions of humans, disasters almost always result in widespread destruction of the regions in which they take place as well as the suffering of a considerable number of people. Different kinds of people react in different ways depending on the kind of catastrophe that has occurred (Suresh , 2020). The human race has been helped by advancements in science and technology to halt the events, to foresee the events and more out of the methods such as catastrophes, or to develop means of recovery after the events had already taken place. On the other hand, a number of major disasters, such as gas leaks, earthquakes, oil spills, chemical spills, forest fires, and floods along the coast in general, among others, are likely to result in fatalities and the destruction of property when they strike (Winston, 2020).

Landslides are one of the leading causes of loss of property, mortality, and population relocation when they occur in highly populated regions of the world's interior. The landslides that occur in Nigeria are usually the result of a deep gully being cut (MOWD, 2022). The most dangerous gully erosion in Nigeria occurs in the south-eastern region of the country, namely in the states of Enugu, Abia, Imo, and Anambra; another, less severe instance occurs in Auchi, which is located in the Edo State of Nigeria. The gully erosion control in the Udenu Local Government Area of Enugu State, Nigeria, is the topic of discussion in this project.
